!!Flashback to 2016 - Ordsall Chord in Manchester!!

DAWSON-WAM was contracted by Skanska BAM jv, working for Network Rail, to assist with developing the design, and then construct temporary works for the Ordsall Chord bridge, which links up three Manchester city centre rail stations for the first time.

The works involved the installation of 900mm diameter CHS piles through and over the existing bridge, and assembly temporary supporting frames under the existing bridge. This complex temporary works system allowed both the removal of the existing bridge, and allow the installation of the iconic network arch bridge.

Additional works included the installation of sheet piled retaining walls up to 7m into the medium strong sandstone. DAWSON-WAM preaugered the sandstone with its Cased CFA double auger drive then used its powerful 150t ultra high frequency vibro hammer to drive sheet piles to the design toe level.

The collaboration between DAWSON-WAM and the Skanska BAM team allowed the removal of the need for redundant stage specific structures helping save the project £850,000. This element of works won the Temporary Works Award at the British Construction Industry Awards 2017.
