SITE CIVIL ENGINEER

The Project

Our civil engineering and geotechnical teams are engaged on a number of large infrastructure construction projects within the transport sector (road and rail) mainly located in Central England. These exciting opportunities secure a pipeline of work until 2026 and include the design & construction of both temporary and permanent geotechnical solutions.

What will a day in this role look like:

You will be a key member of the site team on a busy site, liaising with the main contractor and designer on items such as programme, health & safety and logistics to ensure the smooth running of all site activities

An important part of the role will be the organisation of site activities including works allocations and deliveries, and keeping regular communication with senior site management, who may not be on site full time, keeping them informed of progress on site.

You will be tasked with the compiling and completion of site paperwork including, but not limited to, RAMS, WPP, ITP, Lift Plans (If AP trained), daily task briefings and detailed site records including an engineers diary.

Of utmost importance will be ensuring that H+S standards are met on site with quality standards and the company image maintained at all times.

What are we looking for you to bring to the team:

  • 5+ years’ experience within civil construction from the contractor side on major projects
  • skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships with a variety of people at different levels both internally and externally
  • Significant engineering experience throughout, design, construction and commissioning
  • Strong commercial background

Site Agent

SUMMARY: An opportunity has arisen for a Site Agent for an upcoming Framework contract. The Site Agent will be responsible for overseeing all activities and staff to ensure that procurement, financial control and site activities are managed to the highest standards in all areas of delivery.

Key Responsibilites:

  • Ensure the commercial performance of the contract is maximised
  • Assume overall responsibility for the successful delivery of projects
  • Deliver the work safely and without environmental incidents
  • Deliver the work to the specified quality without defects
  • Ensure production and implementation of Project Plans and waste management plans, in line with Company procedures
  • Produce and manage the project programme 
  • Undertake an ambassadorial role representing the business to customers, public and official bodies

Person Specification:

The successful candidate is likely to meet all of the following criteria:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent:
  • At least 3 years experience in Civil Engineering
  • Working knowledge of NEC contract conditions, CDM regulations, Design Management,Programme and Risk Management and cost control including forecasting, actual cost andvalue reporting
  • Good knowledge of specifications and testing regime relevant to general civil engineering
  • CSR card

SUMMARY: Under general supervision and administrative direction, plans, organises, and leads the activities of assigned engineering section. Oversees and performs wide variety of professional level civil engineering, design, and project management work in diverse areas of responsibility and municipal utilities.

Examples of Duties:

  • Record, analyse, make recommendations and implement changes and improvements to engineering processes, quality control systems, and design procedures.
  • Review section activities and projects (including plans, specifications and estimates) for progress, adherence to schedule, and phase completion.
  • Allocate work and assignments to appropriate personnel. Supervise all assigned staff. Promote and model teamwork concepts, continuous quality improvement, and effective communication and information flow within section and between staff, clients, customers, peers, and entire engineering division
  • Assist the Design, Construction, and Project Management Supervisor in the preparation of performance evaluations, staff reports and the section budget.
  • Advise the Training Officer on the forthcoming sections training needs.
  • Develop, maintain, and insure the continuous improvement of communication, information/resource sharing and work organisation methods.
  • May contact property owners to collect data, solicit support or inform residents in regard to assigned projects.
  • Uses various computer programs as an aid to data analysis project management, modelling, design, and computations, word processing and report presentations.

CONTACTS: The Engineer has daily contact with assigned staff for the purpose of supervision, direction, work co-ordination, and information sharing/gathering. They also have frequent contact with other company employees for the purpose of work co-ordination and information sharing/gathering. The ability to communicate with many different individuals, state positions clearly, and present recommendations/responses in a polite, professional manner is critical to success.

SUPERVISION: Engineers spend a substantial amount of time in supervisory related activities. Including: assisting the Foremen in all aspects of team, unit, and individual supervision; assigning work and projects; organising work crews and activities; work direction; completing performance evaluations; calculating and preparing time sheets; hiring regular and part-time/temporary employees; and providing guidance and instruction. May be assigned direct supervisory authority over professional and/or technical staff.

ACCOUNTABILITY: The Engineer is accountable for the efficiency of the assigned section, the timely completion of all assigned projects and tasks, and the quality of assigned section work.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Supervisory Engineer typically spends a majority of the workday out of doors. Some projects and tasks will require office-based work to gather information and review existing projects. The work may involve exposure to all types of weather, work in traffic; construction sites; uncleared areas and standing/walking on uneven and slippery terrain; and entering manholes, sewer lines and the like.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current principles practices methods and techniques of civil engineering, natural resource management, water resource engineering, environmental sciences, transportation engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and supervision principles.
  • Knowledge of project management/monitoring principles.
  • Knowledge of state and local laws and regulations pertaining to environmental, water resource or natural resource issues.
  • Read, write and speak the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a college or university with a degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering required.

Piling Supervisors

Job Location: Throughout UK & Ireland

SUMMARY: The piling supervisor is responsible for co-ordinating and supervising activities of a piling squad engaged in the installation of piling systems to ensure works are completed efficiently and safely with all proper regard given to quality and the environment in which we work.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

The following duties are not inclusive of all duties, and the incumbent performs other related duties, as required.

  • Ensure that sites are safely managed in accordance with all relevant Health and Safety requirements including implementing new procedures to reduce/remove site and environmental hazards.
  • Ensure all projects are completed on time and on budget.
  • Ensure that all plant and equipment is suitable for purpose.
  • Complete site paperwork.
  • Ensure that necessary resources are available to carry out the works.
  • Manage Subcontractors effectively to ensure they are suitable to deliver.
  • Manage operatives effectively to by motivating your team in addition to dealing with people management issues effectively.
  • Carry out operative appraisals annually.

EDUCATION:  High school or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • 5 years minimum experience on ground engineering sites
  • supervising large piling sites
  • CSCS Gold Card / NVQ Level 3
  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme)
  • a sound technical knowledge of a range of geotechnical products and solutions
  • Full UK driving licence.

DESIREABLE EXPERIENCE:

  • CPCS Slinger / Signaller
  • First Aider
  • Crane Supervisor
  • IT literate, Excel, and Word, PowerPoint.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work is performed primarily out-of-doors involving moderate risks, discomfort, or unpleasantness such as a high level of noise; dust, grease and mud; moving vehicles or machines; cold and/or wet weather. Normal safety precautions are required; and the incumbent may wear some protective clothing and equipment such as rain gear, boots, goggles, and gloves. Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven surfaces; and recurring bending, crouching, stooping and reaching; and occasional lifting of moderately heavy items. Work requires above average physical agility and dexterity.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Operatives are required to work outside on a construction site in any weather conditions that are deemed safe

Piling Rig Operators

We currently wish to recruit a Piling Rig Operators to operate 50T – 130T Rigs.

SUMMARY: To carry out an operational role on site operating heavy plant equipment, whilst achieving excellence in safety and quality, in compliance with the business management system. To assist and support a team in all aspects of any given activity. The employee must follow safe systems of work.

Examples of Duties:

Duties and responsibilities vary depending on the allocated project and are dependent on CSCS/CPCS competencies and training given, but in general include but are not limited to:

  • Having responsibility for one’s own safety and the safety of others.
  • Ensuring that you have been issued with and wear the correct PPE suitable for the given task.
  • Reporting unsafe conditions, observations, near misses, incidents and accidents back to your Supervisor/Foreman and where instructed to the BSL safety department and site management.
  • Following instruction from Site Foreman and Supervisors.
  • Aligning of drilling rig into position for drilling.
  • Aligning and installing piles to specification and carrying out banksman/bankswomen and rig attendant duties.
  • Carry out visual and operational checks and routine maintenance on drilling rig and ancillary items of equipment.
  • Ensuring that all plant and equipment inspections are carried out routinely in accordance with the company’s policies and that they are recorded.
  • Operating ancillary equipment and plant, as and when needed and if suitable qualified, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the business procedures/method statements.
  • Parking, securing and making safe plant and equipment after use.
  • Working with cranes and slinging loads for movement and installation.
  • Communicating with other workers, using signals, radios, or telephones, to start and stop flows or materials or substances.
  • Carrying out manual handing using safe methods.
  • Preparing and cleaning up construction sites e.g. moving materials and equipment and performing excavation and compaction activities.
  • Assisting with the safe loading and unloading of vehicles with supplies, equipment, and construction materials.
  • Moving tools, equipment, and construction materials to and from work areas.
  • Excavating, backfilling, and moving materials using shovels and rakes.
  • Assembling and dismantling ramps, catwalks, shoring and barricades on construction sites.
  • Ensure compliance with business procedures and company polices.

  • Proven experience of operating heavy plant equipment and the relevant CPCS card to support this.
  • The individual will be required to use their own initiative and judgement in the role. They must know when to refer issues to the site supervisor.
  • They will be both focused and thorough and have the credibility to advise management when something needs addressing.
  • Understand the importance of quality in the delivered product.
