Leeds Railway Station

We have completed all our pile installation works for the £46.1m transformation of Leeds Railway Station main entrance and surrounding area. This a fantastic upgrade delivered under SCAPE by Balfour Beatty plc for Leeds City Council.

The works involved the installation of piles through an existing brick barrel goit structure, which was filled with foam concrete, and other assumed structures from this heavily developed site. To remove significant temporary works DAWSON WAM proposed to core through these structures with our Cased CFA system, and installed permanent casing to significantly reduce the loading of the structures and transfer the loads to the underlying soils.

The site was extremely restricted, with limited working room, and daily collaborative planning allowed efficient progress across the site. Temporary casings were installed using Cased CFA techniques on one of our ABI TM22s and using a Movax Manipulator to handle the casings and remove people plant interfaces.

Piles were installed through various made ground, river bed gravels and into mudstone. Cased CFA was used to mitigate flighting in the made ground and gravels, and with high torque systems to allow efficient penetration into the mudstone and to avoid issues around the polishing of mudstone.
