We were tasked with installing buttress piles to prop our secant walls and adjacent party walls on a complex basement construction package in Central London. Originally designed as full length Universal Columns, we were driven by logistic issues and lifting capacity of our site equipment to reduce the length of the UC and the overall weight of the reinforcing respectively.
We devised an innovative spliced UC and cage system, mitigating these issues, and used the The Federation of Piling Specialists recommended SUPERLATCH® system to quickly and safely connect the sections together. These reinforcement systems were installed within a 750mm diameter, 15m long piles installed using CFA techniques and using a 78% GGBS blended concrete mix.
Thanks go to Paul Holland at Thames Reinforcing and Steve Render for their assistance with the solution.
