Angus: Montrose Bridge with Pedestrian Walkway

DAWSON-WAM Ltd provided a 162m long temporary steel bridge to Balfour Beatty Ltd at Montrose, Scotland. The bridge was to act as temporary replacement to allow the removal and replacement of the Montrose Bridge that connected the north and south peninsulas of the wide sea inlet at Montrose on the A92.

The bridge, 6.4m wide, comprised a modular arrangement of steel bridge beams and deck mats. The bridge was designed to be suitable for normal highway loadings on a busy single carriageway.

The bridge was supported on pairs of driven tubular piles, 30m in length, and at 12m centres. As each 12m section of bridge was completed the crane advanced forward to install the next pair of tubular piles and the process repeated.

In addition to the main bridge a 1.8m wide pedestrian walkway was provided adjacent to the temporary bridge. All services were diverted through ducts located on one side of the walkway until completion of the new permanent bridge.

The bridge was in use at Montrose until November 2005 but thereafter is available as a temporary access bridge for highway or construction traffic.
